Dr. CarrieAnn Sutkin was born in 1962 in Detroit, Michigan. She moved with her family to the San Francisco Bay area in 1978. A year later she volunteered for a nonprofit organization Amigos de las Americas and at age 17 she spent a month in the Dominican Republic, vaccinating woman, children and Haitian farmworkers. She attended Merrill College, UC Santa Cruz from 1980-84 and lived in Mexico City in 1981-82 studying Spanish, political science and social anthropology at UNAM with field study in the Mexico City neighborhood.
