MANNY PACQUIAO IS BACK!!!!!!1111! ...that's the refrain, friends. Memorize it before all hope is ripped from us when a Floyd Mayweather vs Pacquiao rematch is made.
In trouncing a passive and seemingly just plain worn-out Lucas Matthysse, the esteemed Senator Pacquiao was able to tab his first stoppage win in almost nine years. What it means considering the shape of his opponent is tough to say, but it will inevitably keep Manny going a while.
But this weekend, Oleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev meet in the final of the cruiserweight World Boxing Super Series, which has thus far been outstanding, if somewhat inaccessible to U.S. fans. Usyk-Gassiev is a great clash of two undefeated fighters who can whack, and there should be blood and violence. So that's good.
Speaking of violence, Jaime Munguia makes his return to HBO against Liam Smith on the heels of thrashing Sadam Ali just two months ago. The hard-punching junior middleweight looks to be the goods, and toppling Smith in addition to Ali sure would be a solid indicator that he is.
