When Victor Saez was first introduced to the Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project (YASP), he was a participant in a series of weekly workshops for incarcerated youth in the Philadelphia Jail. Vic had been charged as an adult at the age of 14 and was serving time in jail before his eventual release on probation. At that time, Sarah Morris was running the workshops, working as a Criminal Justice Fellow through the AFSC. Later, Sarah became the head of an independent program designed to continue the project as a youth-led initiative. Today both Victor and Sarah work together as the co-coordinators of YASP, based in Philadelphia, PA. They have joined us to talk about the evolution of the project – from empowerment workshops, training youth leaders and providing opportunity to formerly incarcerated youth to building a youth-led political movement. Today they’ll speak to the fight they are waging, and the youth they are empowering. Please join us live this Thursday at 4:30 PM EST.
