The founder of The Atlas Society talks to Jennifer Grossman, stepping back from abstract philosophical explanations for a personal conversation about his early years.  In the first of a series of conversations, Professor Kelley opens up about his dealings with Ayn Rand, what it was like to speak at her (and earlier, her husband's) funeral, and the early days of The Ayn Rand Institute.  After earning a Ph.D. in philosophy from Princeton University in 1975, he joined the philosophy department of Vassar College, where he remained until 1984. He has also taught at Brandeis University as a Visiting Lecturer. Among his books are Unrugged Individualism: The Selfish Basis of BenevolenceThe Contested Legacy of Ayn RandThe Evidence of the Senses, a treatise on epistemology; and The Art of Reasoning, one of the most widely used logic textbooks in the country.
