There's been a lot of sabre rattling in Washington DC lately over the situation in Syria. St. Augustine and others have supported a theory of a "just war," circumstances that allegedly justify going to war - but is that just a pious fiction designed by Augustine to appease the empire, or are there times war is justifiabe - a different question than whether or not it is avoidable?
