Lee Daugherty has been the owner of Alexandre's Bar in the popular Dallas "gayborhhood," Oak Lawn, for 11 years. He is a proud member of the Dallas Tavern Guild, the Cedar Springs Merchant Association, and the Dallas Volunteer Police. After a series of violent hate crimes started to plague the Oak Lawn neighborhood, Lee became a driving force in Take Back Oak Lawn, a grassroots movement to protect LGBT citizens from further attacks. When a staff member at Alexandre's was attacked, the fight became personal. Lee began working with other business owners and activists working to implement permanent solutions to combat crime in the area. This wave of attacks began a string of campaigns, meetings, protests, marches, and daily conversations on combating hate in a loving community. This story, in the legacy of Stonewall, is the story of LGBT people rising up to defend themselves against homophobic violence.
