Functional Girl CJ Legare was born in Tacoma, WA but spent her childhood traveling the globe as an Air Force Brat. After studying theater in college, she became the first plus-size model signed to Elite Model Management’s Miami division and spent her early 20s working in the fashion and entertainment industries. Her mid 20s saw a career change that took CJ back to her nomadic roots traveling the country as a mobile-marketing tour manager. During that time she met and married the love of her life and put down roots in the Lone Star State.No longer living out of her suitcase, the newly minted Texan found herself looking for a way to fuse her background in fashion, entertainment and marketing with her keen desire to make a positive impact on the world. This led to the launch of Functional Girl, a lifestyle firm rooted in the idea that living a good life isn’t a luxury, but a boldly purposeful commitment to yourself. In November of 2008 the first Functional Girl column premiered in All Around Hays magazine, even as CJ began offering personal consulting services, including wardrobe styling and home staging. Her clients’ enthusiastic and often emotional responses confirmed CJ’s belief that women everywhere are looking for a sisterhood that celebrates and empowers women. She has since expanded Functional Girl to include public-speaking engagements, workshops, an e-zine, a podcast and a YouTube channel. Her mission is to empower women to celebrate themselves, to embrace sisterhood and to love the way they live every day.
