How much should you really invest in your coaching practice?

For some types of businesses that is a very clear cut, black and white question.  For coaching it can be very confusing.  Some prospective coaches come to the industry thinking they can simply "hang a shingle" and start a new business for virtually nothing.  Others train, and invest, and train and invest some more and never get off the ground. 

So, how do you know how much you really need to plan on investing, in time, money, and energy, not just to get off the ground, but to thrive?
