Recent studies have shown that people living with celiac disease have an increased risk of developing heart disease. One study published last year that looked at adults - found that patients with celiac disease were almost twice as likely as healthy individuals to develop cardiovascular disease. Another study published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition looked at adolescents and found that by age 17, the prevalence of risk factors for heart disease was higher in adolescents with celiac disease than the general population. So, what is the connection between our guts and our hearts? To help us dive into this topic we have Dr. Michele Mietus-Snyder, a preventive cardiologist from Children’s National Medical Center in the studio.
