To be healthy, wealthy and wise is the mantra that we hear, but what does it really mean? The foundation of Black power is Black health. As the pain of external expressions of racism has affronted our communities, the question becomes what the toll is on our bodies and soul. In a New York Times article entitled Black Health Matters, Jenna Wortham opines on the toll that stress has on her body as she tries to cope. As we have tried to cope with the election, rage, and other environmental stressors, we are often unaware of the importance of self-care and healing.
Dr Alvin Powell, MD specializes in nephrology and is affiliated with Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Due to high rates of stress-related diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, Black Americans have an increased risk of developing kidney failure. According to the American Kidney Fund, Black Americans now represent more than 1/3 of all kidney failure patients living in the United States. Dr. Powell will share with us his thoughts about this silent epidemic and what Black philanthropy should consider when thinking about the future of medicine. He will also share his thoughts on Black philanthropy and why it is important in the field of research and our community at large.
