Apostles. What are they?

Ephesians 4:11  And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.

Are there apostles,still , today? Is there a false 'apostolic' - as well as a true 'apostolic'? Why is an 'apostle'?- or the 'apostolic'- so important to the Lord? 

Is the 'apostolic' important?
