Dr. Bakari is a professor of psychology at Des Moines Area Community College in Iowa. She is also the creator of Talking Trees, an organization that supports and encourages adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse to live openly in order to heal.

She is also a playwright and hosts a FB page also titled Talking Trees. She has been living openly as an incest survivor for the past 6 years when she began to embark on the work with survivors.

To keep balance in her life she practices dance, weight training, runs and is a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo. She is also a poet and shares some of her work on the Talking Trees website.

She and her husband of 23 years completed their PhDs together while homeschooling their two children. Now days, traveling is the one thing that her entire family enjoys, including trips to Egypt, Turkey, Thailand and Mexico.
