In Joshua 9, God creates a battle plan for Joshua's army to destroy the town of Ai, through ambush.  12,000 men died that day.  What was God's intent in wiping out full communites?  Was evil that rampant?

If God's goal was to put his followers in strategic areas to wipe out threats, the Old Testament reveals a precision for these types of confrontations. The plan of ambush was specific.  How has the battle plan changed for redemption in the New Testament?
