Kim Potter, a former Minnesota police officer who mistakenly drew her handgun instead of her Taser during a traffic stop in which she fatally shot Daunte Wright, was found guilty by a jury.

The jury deliberated for four days before finding the former Brooklyn Center officer guilty of first- and second-degree murder. Potter, 49, was required to receive about seven years in prison on the most severe charge, according to state sentencing guidelines. Prosecutors said they would seek a longer sentence. Judge Regina Chu ordered Potter held without bail, and scheduled her sentencing for February 18. Potter winced when the verdict was read but otherwise appeared not to react. A short while later, she was handcuffed and taken into custody pending sentencing.

On February 18, 2022, Hennepin County District Judge Regina Chu choked up as she described the difficulty deciding on a sentence for Potter, who said she meant to use her Taser but mistakenly fired her handgun into Wright’s chest as he tried to drive away from a traffic stop in April. Judge Chu gave her a sentence of about two years. Wright’s family and attorneys angrily condemned Chu, who is Asian American, for going well below prosecutors’ recommendations. They pointed out that a Black former officer convicted of shooting a white woman in 2017 in a different Minnesota case got no such mercy despite his expressions of remorse.

This sentence issued by Judge Regina Chu was a "slap in the face" to all Black Americans and should be considered criminal misconduct by a judicial officer. Why were there no comments by President Biden or vice president Kamala Harris about this mockery of justice?
