Cecil Phillips is currently in his fifth year as head football coach at Amherst County High School located in Amherst, Virginia. In those five years he has compiled a 46-14 record and been a part of two Seminole District Championships, two Region III Championships, and finished as AA State Runner-up in 2008 and 2009. Prior to being named the Lancers head coach, Phillips started his head coaching career at King’s Fork High School, a brand new school located in Suffolk, VA that opened up in 2004. He also served as an assistant coach at William Campbell (VA) from 1994-1997, Bainbridge High School (GA) from 1997-2000, and Radford High School (VA) from 2000-2004. Coach Phillips is a 1992 graduate of Ferrum College where he received his BS in History and Political Science and he graduated with a MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech in 1994.
Coach Phillips has spoken at several clinics throughout the east coast on a wide variety of topics associated with the Wing-T offense. His teams have been known to have great success running the Jet Sweep from multiple formations that also includes a complimentary run game and play action passing package. Presently he is utilizing a balanced single wing approach that was introduced to him by Apopka, FL head football coach Rick Darlington and he also has most recently installed a Diamond formation that allows him to get his three best running backs on the field at one time.
