Many people don't understand that the personal experience of day-to-day, person-to-person racism in America is deliberately socially engineered through institutional racism in economic, education, and social policies enacted (mostly crafted by people identifiing as white) at municipal, state, and federal levels . Because of this lack of understanding along with the denial of white privilege, movements like Black Lives Matter are, at first pass, psychologically threatening to white people in general and Americans over the age of 30 who have not had the benefit of cultural diversity and the richness it brings to all lives.

I'm delighted to weldome Andrea Durham. Andrea is a member of the Unitarian Society of Germantown, a congregation in existence for more than 150 years in Philadelphia, PA. Interestingly, many of the key personalities in Unitarian Universalists were practicing racists. Unitarian Universalists are facing this institutional blemish head on.

Today, Unitarian Universalists are choosing a long term commitment to social justice. They understand the value of supporting Black Lives Matter along with a push for mass decarceration. Andrea shares information how Unitarians are putting their hearts, minds, and spirits into the hard, and at times agonizing, work of deconstructing racism when America is being manipulated by economics, foreign and domestic policy to once again use black bodies as the front line for social control in the United States.

On Sunday July 24th, at 10:30 a.m., the Unitarian Society of Germantown is hosting a special service followed by community activism on behalf of black bodies and black lives in the City of Philadelphia. As an organizer of the service and event, Andrea shines in her power as one working with a multi-racial team. USG shines in its commitment to all lives having meaning.
