Discussing Poetry Literacy with Say What Poetry Slam Team

Marcus Turner aka Black Phoenix a Lynchburg, Virginia native who migrated to Simpsonville South Carolina found his voice through poetry. Black Phoenix embodies humbleness but when on stage is a fiery phoenix. He is a multi-talented musician and brilliant writer whose awards include National Nerd Slam Champion, South Easter Regional Southern Fried Haiku Champion, and Greenville Slammaster

Jenice Pleasant brings her musical talent and passion for poetry in inspired cadence to stages across the South East. Originally from Greenville, the beautiful Jenice Pleasant is a singer-songwriter, poet, and visual artist, as well as a National Poetry Slam semi-finalist. She is known for beautifully weaving music into jazz-inspired poetry.

Samuel “Myth” Mosley is an artist, storyteller, and co-founder of Charleston, SC’s UnSpoken Word Open Mic. Born in Aiken, SC, Mosley has performed his signature features across the United States, especially for his homes of New Orleans, Atlanta, and Charleston. His style melds southern lyricism, historical intrigue, and a surrealist take on the African/African-American tradition to create a contemporary black American myth. He is currently working on his first book of poetry based on his feature, “Heaven Be A Black Land”. 

Asma Olajuwon  is a poet and visual artist and student at University of South Carolina Upstate. She started her poetry career as a Brave New Voices Youth Poet in Texas & is now a veteran member of the Say What Poetry Slam Team in Greenville, SC.
