In the perpetual doom and gloom that prevaded throughout the U.S. Navy in the immediate aftermath of the dastardly sneak attack upon our naval and air installations in and around Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by the Japanese on December 7th 1941, the U.S. Navy had precious few ships left to stand against the relentless enemy onslaught. The Aircraft Carrier USS YORKTOWN was one of those ships. Big, beautiful, and strong, she contested every inch of the Pacific from the Japanese throughout the first harrowing months of 1942, inflicting huge losses upon their Empire, eventually culminating with their cataclysmic defeat at the Battle of Midway in early June of that year.
