In the doom and gloom that prevaded in the U.S. Navy in the immediate aftermath of the dastardly sneak attack by the Japanese on United States' Naval and Air installations at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7 1941, our great nation had precious few ships left in the Pacific to stem the relentless enemy onslaught. The aircraft carrier, USS YORKTOWN [CV-5] was one of those ships. Big, beautiful and strong, this heroic fighting lady served the U.S. Navy with great honor and sitinction as she fought back stubbornly against the rising tide of Japanese agression. This great fighting spirit culminatied with the cataclysmic Japanese defeat at the Battle of Midway in which air groups from the USS YORKTOWN [CV-5] played an integral role in driving a dagger right through the pride of the Japanese Imperial Fleet, forever truning the tide of the War in the Pacific. This and many upcoming broadcasts will detail the amazing life and legacy of the USS YORKTOWN [CV-5].
