In this series, America's Poorest Cities, is brought to you so you can see what the leadership of America is letting happen to the most vulnerable among us.  Today we discuss Camden New Jersey, located directly across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. The people of Camden live in crushing poverty where the only industry that thrives there is drugs. How can an American city end up this but better yet HOW does it continue to stay this way?  We are in an election year why aren’t these people talking about healing the wounds caused by misdirected values that allows people in "the greatest country in the world" to suffer in this way.  Camden is filled with abandoned neighborhoods where trees grow from the roofs and the street resemble those of Afghanistan.  How do we let American citizens down in this way?

Here's how, with people like Norcross, the pimp of poverty. A “powerful political boss” who pushed for a tax break program in Camden back in 2013 reaped myriad benefits as a result. A report published by ProPublica and WNYC found George E. Norcross III, his family members and companies affiliated with him secured more than $1 billion in tax breaks after the program launched. Sources told the outlets federal investigators are now examining real estate trades spurred by the program. Norcross maintains the approximately $300 million he and two business partners have invested in the city has been a benefit to the municipality. “We took a chance because of these incentives,” he said. “No one was going to invest in a city where you could buy sex, get murdered and buy drugs all in the same block. No one.”  (Propublica)
