Our Guests: Julia VanRooyen, MD Julia VanRooyen, MD, is a Fellow at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. Dr. VanRooyen is a gynecologic surgeon, with subspecialty training in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. She trained in gynecology and obstetrics at Northwestern University in Chicago, and completed her urogynecology training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. VanRooyen has worked in several international settings. While at Johns Hopkins, she developed training programs in reproductive health in Azerbaijan. Other international experience includes work in Somalia, Kenya, and Russia. During her residency training, Dr. VanRooyen completed a special elective working with the Indian Health Service with the Navajo tribe in Fort Defiance. Dr. VanRooyen's current interests are in gender-based violence and the medical, surgical and psychological complications of rape and sexual abuse. She was raised by her maternal grandmother Elizabeth Bettner who was an active advocate for Coconut Grove community and awarded the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce Golden Coconut in 1974. Meme Ferre’ discovered an epic moment at four years old in her grandfather’s studio on Biscayne Bay in Miami. In that instant, the satin sunrise ignited the morning light as it seasawed, dancing and bouncing on the ripples of the sun washed sea. She grabbed the moment and somehow turned it into a lifetime. She has reinterpreted these embryonic memories into her artwork.
