Have you been looking for an affordable radio transceiver that not only covers the ham bands, but can pick up police, fire, ems and other frequencies without breaking the budget?  Well look no further.  The Baofeng UV5R has arrived from China and it has some very promising features.  While the radio itself has a glitch in the scan feature, this can easily be overlooked when you consider all that it does for very little money.  Built solid and covering a wide range of frequencies, this little Chinese UHF/VHF radio has a lot to offer, especially once you add a few extras to it.  This week, after a lot of use, I have a review ready for this little Baofeng, and let me tell you, you get a lot for under $50.00.  I will also let you know what kinds of accessories you should get and what kind of range you can expect.

On a similar note, I’ll get back into the topic of radio networks for preppers, Focusing on one that is currently being developed by Bruce Beach who you may know from Doomsday preppers and the ARK II project.  Bruce is working on not just a network, but an affordable radio with a very interesting stealth antenna that makes detecting your signal’s origin quite difficult.
