Early in U.S. history, the ruling class retained its power by using many weapons. One of the most potent weapon was psychology. Poor whites were made to feel that, regardless of how pitiful they were, there was always someone they were better than. They could rape, kill, and terrorize black people without fear of reprisal. Some whites rationalized that the " inferior race " would " get their just reward in the hereafter. " The hypocritical segregation of Christian churches along racial lines is a remnant of this contention. Employers capitalized on racial divisions by recruiting black workers as strikebreakers. In a 1917 incident, employers in East St. Louis, recruited southern blacks to take jobs for low pay to drive wages down. White workers organized a whites-only union in response. Racial tensions mounted and in July an attempt to drive blacks from their neighborhoods led to a riot in which 40 blacks and 9 whites were killed. Is a college degree earned by black people today akin to the promise of heaven, and desegregated workplaces and neighborhoods of yesterday ? Do we really live in a society where how far you go depends on how hard you work, or is this another lie that makes the unfair advantage of being white in America psychologically justified ? Me says yes, what says you ?
