A black woman’s young life is filled with challenges that can either make her or break her. Social hierarchy, impossible relationships, increased responsibility, false friends, economic challenges, love lost, family crises, spiritual searches, and finding oneself are just a few examples of the trials they endure. Sadly, many young black women are too afraid, too proud, or too ashamed to ask for help. Listen in as you hear stories from our contributors to our newest book Souls of My Young Sisters: Young Women Break Their Silence with Personal Stories That Will Change Your Life from Kensington Publishing from the Souls of My Sisters book collection. In Desperation, written by Ebony Fletcher, involves painful memories of a man she once loved: “He pulled the revolver out of his coat jacket. He said to me, ‘If I can’t have you, nobody will’…We started to fight for the gun, and he shot me in my leg. He sat on my back after I fell to the floor. He put the gun directly on the back of my head and pulled the trigger…” In her essay I Have a Stalker by Milani Rose. After enduring a painful childhood, Rose tells a hurtful story of betrayal: “I decided to end our friendship, and that’s when it all began. It started with emails, Facebook posts, fake Twitter accounts, and then she graduated to distributing the ultimate — a sex tape." This show will resonate with women trying to figure out what’s next, as well as those headed to college, in the midst of a quarter-life crisis, or getting careers and/or families started. Join our host Sky LaRose, Clinician Dr. Elisa and journalist Minal Bopah as they discuss honest — sometimes heartbreaking — but always encouraging real-life stories on what it is like to be a young black woman in America.
