“Jesus begins the work that His Father sent Him to do”    Matthew 4

Jesus had just been baptized by John the Baptist. You may wonder why Jesus had to be baptized since He was sinless. The occasion of the public baptism was Jesus giving us an example that baptism was ordained by God. It was a testimony directly from heaven of the Father’s pleasure with the Son by descending the Holy Spirit upon Him. Here we see the trinity at work, the Father letting us know that He is in control of our salvation, the Son, ready to do the work that the father sent Him to do and become our Savior, and the Holy Spirit, who will be with us once Jesus leaves and do everything that Jesus would do if He would have stayed. It is a beautiful picture of the triune nature of God. The Father loves the elect from before the foundation; Jesus Christ is on display at His baptism.

Satan immediately comes to tempt Jesus and tries to get Him to tempt God. As you can see Satan knows something is about to happen and in his limited intelligences and power, tried to change the course that was designed by God before the foundation of the world. Satan didn’t tempt Jesus in the temple or at His baptism, but in the desert where He was tired, alone and hungry, and thus more vulnerable.
