The book of Psalms was mainly written by King David and other authors.   When David wrote the 23 Psalms he wrote it from his own experience because his earlier years were spent caring for sheep as a shepherd.  When he wrote the 23 Psalms he used what he knew to be true and used it to express how he felt.  Remember the bible was written by man but inspired by God. God inspired David to use the analogy of a shepherd and his sheep to write the 23 Psalm and he knew that David would be able to express, describe, and write a correct illustration of the relationship between a shepherd and his sheep in great details.   Psalm 23 is the most read, quoted, memorized, and though after passages of scripture.
