Grew up in Chicago, later moved to Wisconsin, 13 years in Boston, moved to Seattle 3 years ago to continue graduate education Professional life: scientist/materials engineer working in nanotechnology R&D group in Seattle Business: too many hobbies. I live to make/create things. Interests developed in early childhood in my dad’s (engineer/carpenter) workshop. Soap love came from grandmother’s/mom’s love of all that’s simple and all that’s natural. Best soap recipes I have are from my grandma Greatest passions: woodworking, sewing, soap making, knitting How did the business started: search for perfect soap making aids. I didn’t own a house previously and I had no room for workshop setup. Since its purchase I have been remodeling it building furniture for it and working on other projects. I also had a space for a soap room. From there I came to realize that I needed molds easy to work with and ones in which I could create prettiest designs possible. My molds received such great feedback from fellow soapers that I decided to share them with others. When I became a vendor for Bramble Berry I realized that I have created something unique. It’s only beginning but we’ll see

The News In Review - Barrett And Guests

    in Current Events

The 2016 race for a stay at the worlds most exclusive hotel The White House is just getting underway, and people are already 'thinking about, thinking about running', There are no end of potential candidate talking about wearing the GOP mantle. Could this be third time lucky for Mitt Romney? Could the Bush family setting up for a threepeat with Jeb? Will Chris Christie throw his hat in the ring, rumor has it the cooking in the Whitehouse is quite good, and plentiful.

Oh and of course we have the perenial non-candidate The Donald. But what would a modern election be without him? Hell if he wins it would probably spawn a rash of reality TV series, I rather like 'Celebrity Cabinet Member'. Even the insufferable Sarah Palin is making noises. I am waiting for one of the Kardashian tribe to anounce their interest.

Live: Your Health In Your Hands ...The Secret of Essential oils

    in Music

An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the "oil of" the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An oil is "essential" in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant.Essential oils do not form a distinctive category for any medical, pharmacological, or culinary purpose. They are not essential for health.

Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation, often by using steam. Other processes include expression or solvent extraction. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.

Essential oils have been used medicinally in history. Medical applications proposed by those who sell medicinal oils range from skin treatments to remedies for cancer and often are based solely on historical accounts of use of essential oils for these purposes. Claims for the efficacy of medical treatments, and treatment of cancers in particular, are now subject to regulation in most countries. As the use of essential oils has declined in evidence-based medicine, one must consult older textbooks for much information on their use.

Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades with the popularity of aromatherapy, a branch of alternative medicine that claims that essential oils and other aromatic compounds have curative effects. Oils are volatilized or diluted in a carrier oil and used in massage, diffused in the air by a nebulizer, heated over a candle flame, or burned as incense.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_oil.

    @Ms_Terree aka The Frugal Foodie

    in Cooking

A little about me: I've been a finalist in a cooking demonstration competition, prepped and plated up food alongside some famous Food Network chefs, volunteered at large food and wine charity events, and judged at World Food Championships competitions in California and the Finals in Las Vegas. But my greatest passion is for quality food that doesn't bust the average family's budget!

I am not a vegetarian, but I do like to balance my diet by eating healthier during the week. So, I observe #MeatlessMondays and #FishFridays because it's not just healthy, but also economical (and good for the environment)! If you're a die-hard meat-eater like me, you won't give up meat for even one meal a week unless the dish tastes great. So I search out dishes where you don't feel like it's missing something or lacking flavor!

I will also talk about what you can do with things on sale, or re-purposing leftovers. I once fed a hungry group of 20 poker players a corned beef & cabbage dinner on St. Patrick's Day, (yes, mostly men) for only $20. And a few went back for second and third helpings!

I have met some very cool, fun people in the food industry, and I hope I'll be able to share their stories - -  starting with my own! I'll also tackle some of the food news or trends that pop up and share my take on these fads, while sharing information and recipes.

I have no formula set in stone about how this show will go moving forward, so if I get a lot of interest, I may address questions on air that you send to me! So please tell your friends about this show and let's have some fun while we save money!

INDIE REVIEW RADIO/ CHEF SHAWNEE / INDIE FOOD

    in Entertainment

Shawnee Braggs is an amazing caterer that has tantalized the taste buds of many a celebrity, political figure and foodie for over 10 years. Known for her creative dishes and exotic marriage of foods, she has become one of the most sought after caterer on both coasts.  Well one bite of a meal prepared by Shawnee Briggs and it just doesn’t matter. Some may say she is a cook because the food is prepared with such love and endearment that it’s as if you are sitting at Grandma’s table for Sunday dinner. Others may attest that she has to be a Chef because of the flawless presentation and the skillful manner in which she prepares her meals. Both would be absolutely correct.  Whether you are savoring the flavor of her pan seared Salmon or enjoying the warm and fuzzy feeling of her mac & cheese, you must attest, the food is AMAZING. There is something undeniably regal about her food presentation. At any given setting you can sample one of her signature dishes like fruit or shrimp on a bed of roses. These are attributed to her grandmother Rose, which she finds as a source of inspiration to this day.  Her ability to create art with her food has not gone unnoticed. Her catering company, Cater By Shawnee, brags of a client list of artists and celebrities the likes of Aretha Franklin, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Fifty Cent, Essence magazine, Malaak Rock, Dwayne Wade (Miami Heat), the Prime minister of Antigua and Wendy Williams (radio / television host) as a short list. She has been featured on FatBoy Radio, XM Satellite and was at one point a regular on the Wendy Williams Show and made The Network Journal’s 40 under 40 List. Shawnee’s hard work has not gone unnoticed.  She has garnered the attention of a major network and will be shooting a pilot for the show at the end of the month.

    in Military

Come join host Dave Etter by calling (516) 453-9167 - I'll have the show on loudspeakers! It'll be great! The show will mirror alot of the event content, so, we will talk about surviving deployment souse issues like keeping the long distance romance alive, planning and keeping a deployment budget, what kind of friends to make/keep/avoid, how to stay married (no cheating), how to learn from the deployment and prepare for the next - or plan for seperation from the military. All things every inquiring spouse should know! BTW, this show will be toned down language-wise to support the onsite live nature of the event, ok, guys? Keep it "G" rated!

MMSRS is a weekly 2-hour web-based radio show, hosted by Army spouse Dave Etter, focusing on the needs of men married to serving military members, both men and women. Male Military Spouses are a small niche of military spouses, comprising of only 7%-8% of all military spouses. We feel left out, usually, at support functions - especially those designed with the spouses being identified as "wives"! We get cajoled at playgrounds where our kids play, from the mommies there who think we don't belong. We are proud SAHDs, who gave up our careers to follow our spouses as they dedicate thier lives to defend our country! Here, on this show, we come together and share beer recipes, diaper changing techniques, financial discoveries - manly things, for men! Airs Fridays at Noon CT, rated R for the cussing that can occur, and available for download (podcast) immediately following each show.

Journey to a Higher Realm: Positive Psychology

    in Self Help

Native Vermonter Marla Simpson, M.A., leads us away from negativity and illness and takes us on a journey into the higher realm of positive psychology. She explores how our focus on healing energy, love, light - in other words 'what works and what is actually healing' -- plays a critical role in the recovery journey.

In this show, Marla draws on her extensive lived experience of dual recovery from both mental health and substance use challenges.  As one of the last patients evacuated from the Vermont State Hospital when hurricane Irene hit VT in 2011, Marla takes a firm stand against forced medications and coercive methods of treatment. Instead, Marla bears witness to the transformative effects of a clean and sober, health and wellness-oriented lifestyle. Striving daily to model a positive, effective voice for change and healing,  Marla urges us "We are all on this journey in life together. Let's work & live in harmony, peace, & love."

A graduate of Middlebury College and Antioch University New England, Marla holds a BA in theatre and a Masters Degree in Counseling. Marla loves cooking, reading, animals, walking, arts, music, movies & spending time with her boyfriend, the love of her life. Holly of "Southern Mom Loves" Talks #DoableDiets & What Will Work Best For You

    in Lifestyle

No need for another "Now or Never" leap into a fad diet. They are never going to work. Not ever. This is true according to bazillions of moms just like me, you and my friend Holly of "Southern Mom Loves".

It's time to get real about getting healthy. Honestly, I like to eat. I like to eat the wrong things at the wrong times, in the wrong quantities. I don't have extra time to go to the gym, and when I do have extra time I already know what I'm going to use it for: sleep (although shower wins a close 2nd place).

Moms turn to bloggers like Holly because she keeps it real, honesty, possitive & encourages happy health & beauty. We love her fun & pretty posts, plus the easy DIY & beauty reviews. Best thing is, she's one of us. Just trying to deal with the curveball motherhood throws, with grace & beauty.

Hear us girl-chat on what really has & really hasn't worked & WHY. You know me, I've done it all, taken it all, been pitched it all. Diet talk is about to get real. Join us! More info & helpful links to recipes, strategies & fitness on the iHeart Moms blog now. Connect with Holly anytime on SouthernMomLoves.com
