What are we really celebrating on December 25th?

The Christmas season is sadly over-commercialized. That is apparent to all of us. Variations of this pagan holiday flourished throughout the first few centuries after Jesus Christ, but it probably wasn't until 336 AD that Emperor Constantine officially converted this pagan tradition into the "Christian" holiday of Christmas. Was Jesus really born on December 25th? So then, who decided that Jesus' birth would be celebrated on that date?
