Breast cancer continues to take a heavy toll on American women, 26 years after health advocates named October National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Just how big a toll? In 2006, 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,820 women died, according to the latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women. But the news isn't all bad. In fact, women are living longer than ever before after a diagnosis. Here's something else you might not know. Men get breast cancer too, though much less frequently than women. For every 100 cases in women, one man gets breast cancer, according to the CDC. What steps can be taken to reduce the risk? Regular exercise and controlling your weight can help, experts say. So can limiting the amount of alcohol you drink. Regular mammograms can be helpful too. TruthbeToldbyHim Radio is proud to introduce our Co-Host for the month of October, founding President of The Denise Roberts Breast Cancer Foundation, Mrs. Denise Roberts. Mrs. Roberts is a 20-year breast cancer survivor, who is committed to getting the word out, “Mammograms can save lives.” Her own “battle scars” have become medals in this war against breast cancer and ignorance regarding healthcare. In 1999, her experience and struggles inspired her to establish The Denise Roberts Breast Cancer Foundation (TDRBCF), which is dedicated to all women under 40, but specifically to women of color, who do not have the same encouragement or opportunities to receive professional healthcare testing. TDRBCF is based in Inglewood, CA, and provides mammograms, referrals to physicians, a support line, support materials, videos, and an educational library to help families of breast cancer victims. Please tune in as we spend the month of October (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month), reaching, teaching and educating people, and transforming lives through awareness and healthy living.
