The Israelites were complaining again, and God sent poisonous snakes in their midst as a punishment. The way to survive a snake bite was to keep their eyes on a replica of a poisonous snake being held up on a pole.
The snake being held up is considered by many to be representative of Jesus being lifted up on a cross. All who look to Jesus and the sacrifice He made on the cross will be eternally saved.
