God has conditional promises for blessing. The bad news for those who reject God is that he metes out serious punishment for disobedience. In this chapter, it seems that the harsh punishment gives a foreshadowing of how serious it is to die without having accepted Jesus as your Savior -- because his wrath promises actions that sound a lot like going through hellish experiences.

It is a mistake for us to think God is passive and accepting of our disobedience. His punishments are meant to drive us back to our knees in prayer and to enter back into restored relationship with our heavenly Father
