Our guest this morning is El Segundo Police Chief Mitch Tavera.

A life-long South Bay resident, Chief Tavera began his career with the El Segundo Police Department in 1978 as a Police Cadet while attending college.

He attended the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy in 1979 and since then has been promoted from Police Officer to Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and as of April 7, 2010, to Chief of Police.

During the past thirty plus years, Chief Tavera has had several assignments including: Criminal Investigator; WESTNET and LAIMPACT Team Leader; US Customs liaison; SWAT Team member, leader and Commander; Patrol and Detective Commander, and Captain over both the Administrative and Field Operations Bureaus.

As Chief, he has overseen the department for the past three years during which time several programs have been instituted to mitigate crime and protect the El Segundo community.

His training highlights include graduation from the University of Southern California’s Delinquency Control Institute, the FBI National Academy, the Senior Management Institute for Police and the West Point Leadership Institute.

He received an Associate Arts Degree, a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice.

Chief Tavera resides in the South Bay along with his four children.
