Introducing a new pet to your home is a huge commitment that most people do not think through beforehand. When it comes to making a choice for buying or adopting, many people still choose to buy an animal from a pet shop instead of adopting. There are so many cats and dogs that are put down in kill centers each day because no one wants to adopt them. This is really heart wrenching. Thanks to the internet, you can now adopt animals simply from your own computer. This is so important because it can help families with small children see pictures of these animals beforehand. Petfinder (http://www.petfinder.com) is an online, searchable database of animals that need homes. It is also a directory of more than 13,000 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Organizations maintain their own home pages and available-pet databases. Petfinder is made up of animal-care professionals and regular people volunteering for their local animal welfare organizations all working together to maintain active and accurate homeless pet lists. Most animal welfare volunteers work in other professions but take the time out of their hectic schedules because they truly are devoted to helping these animals. The success and the magnitude of this project is largely due to their tireless efforts to make this difference. Petfinder.com is a site where you can actually see cats and dogs that are up for adoption. In 2009 alone, Petfinder.com facilitated more than 2.1 million adoptions in the U.S. and Canada. Petfinder.com is responsible more than 60 percent of adoptions in North America. As of October 2010, there are more than 346,000 adoptable animals listed on Petfinder.com. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, my guest will be Ms. Betsy Saul, Petfinder's co-founder of this amazing organization. If you are an animal lover or are simply interested making your home a forever home, stay tuned!
