You have fatwas and you have fretwas. A fatwa is a legitimate scholarly argument that uses Quran, sunna, concensus, analogy, and valid legal precedent to produce a credible ruling about something. A fretwa is a fatwa that defies logic, defies our scriptures, and designed to make people fret about something that they need not fret about, or to not fret about something that they need to fret about. A recent fatwa making Halloween pagan practices permissible is an examply of a fretwa. Fretwas are becoming more commonplace these days and are frequently politically motivated or come with an ulterior motive. In this episode of the Muslim review, I'm going to talk about how bizzare fatwas take us off track and are used to control Muslims, particularly those living in the West. We'll be taking your calls.
