The challenge of having an ex-student join the staff of a school, whether it is a good thing or a bad thing and as an example of Joseph Campbell’s Hero Journey is discussed by Bryan Marks, COO of Coral Reef Academy in Samoa to Lon May 19, 2016. Bryan had graduated from Coral Reef Academy 19 years ago which profoundly changed his life in a positive direction. Rejoining the school as a staff member is in a sense returning home, and that can give him great insight in working with the students. At the same time, the boundaries can get blurred. Bryan’s discussion of his experience with Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” can help determine in advance if the fit is right for “returning home.”
