This Spot of Ground: Women and Religion in the African Diaspora

Please join me in welcoming to Terri Talk the dynamic Dr. Carol Duncan. We will be discussing her new and fascinating book, "This Spot of Ground" Carol B. Duncan is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religion and Culture at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. She received her doctorate in sociology from York University. Professor Duncan is a researcher and award-winning teacher who has presented her scholarly work and lectured at Canadian and American universities and internationally. During the 2006-2007 academic year she was a Research Associate in the Women’s Studies in Religion Program at Harvard Divinity School and Visiting Associate Professor of Women’s Studies and Religion and Society. It was during her time at Harvard that [T.C.] came to meet Prof. Duncan. She currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board for the Women’s Studies in Religion Program at Harvard Divinity School. A sociologist of religion, Prof. Duncan’s research interests include the African Diaspora, Caribbean religions, especially the Spiritual Baptist tradition, religion and postcolonialism, the Black Church in Canada and religion and popular culture. She has published on a variety of subjects including: the Spiritual Baptist faith in Canada; Black Caribbean women’s religious lives, Black women and motherhood; and cultural representation in film and video. Professor Duncan is the author of This Spot of Ground: Spiritual Baptists in Toronto published by Wilfrid Laurier University Press and co-author of a second book, Black Church Studies: An Introduction published by Abingdon Press, 2007.
