For nearly three decades, the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Federation (GLTF), has facilitated a low cost tennis community within the San Francisco Bay Area. The club boasts more than 500 members from novices to teaching pros, and gay, straight, and transgender players.
For a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization, GLTF holds a lot of events. In 2009, GLTF has fielded over 35 USTA teams and organized more than 60 events throughout the SF Bay Area. While some of our events are purely competitive others are social. Social events provide a fun, relaxed, and healthy environment for members to interact, meet new friends, and compete with or against players that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to play. Many of our social events are open to the public and free due to generous support from USTA Norcal.
Join the GLTF for a tennis social and BBQ
Social Doubles at SFTC. On the third Friday of each month, GLTF hosts an evening of social doubles from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Tennis Club. This free event that provides an easy way to test drive the club.
Throughout the year, we offer:
But, our biggest yearly event, the U.S. Gay Open (USGO), celebrates its 30th Anniversary at Stanford University on Memorial Day weekend, May 28-31, 2010. It's the largest gay tennis tournament in the United States and attracts international players who want to compete on the big stage in singles, doubles, and World Team Tennis. The USGO is a volunteer-run event that donates much of its proceeds to local charities.

UC BERKELEY CAPTURES THE USTA CAMPUS CHAMPIONSHIP – NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TITLE
Coed Recreational Teams from UC Berkeley, UC Davis and Stanford University Earn Automatic Bids to the 2010 USTA National Campus Championship in Surprise, Arizona
UC Berkeley defeated UC Davis this past weekend at Stanford University to capture the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Campus Championship – Northern California title, and earned an automatic bid to the USTA National Campus Championship in Surprise, Arizona on April 15-17, 2010. UC Berkeley, UC Davis and third place finisher Stanford University who also received a bid, will join the Champions and Runners Up from each of the 17 USTA Sections, as well as a number of other teams who will receive at-large bids.
UC Berkeley received its 4th consecutive USTA Campus Championship – Northern California title after defeating a tough UC Davis team 26-20 in the finals. The home team, Stanford University, gave it their all and took third place at the tournament.
“The USTA is very proud of each and every team that participated this weekend,” said Hilary Somers, Event Tournament Director and Northern California Tennis On Campus Coordinator. “The level of competition was outstanding, and the enthusiasm and camaraderie among the players is what makes this such a great event. We wish UC Berkeley, UC Davis and Stanford University the best of luck in the National Campus Championship and urge other teams to submit their at-large applications as soon as possible.”
This year’s 7th annual USTA Campus Championship – Northern California event drew more than 185 participants on 26 teams from 11 colleges and universities:
Each of the 17 USTA Sections offers a USTA Campus Championship Sectional event. “The Sectional events are designed to provide a competitive opportunity to play closer to home,” said Arrington. “It’s a fun-filled weekend of co-ed team play, social networking and leadership development.” The 2008-2009 USTA Campus Championship Section Events hosted approximately 2,500 players on 315 teams from 205 different colleges and universities across the country.
With over 350,000 students playing high school tennis and only 18,000 playing on the college varsity level, Tennis On Campus provides a tremendous opportunity for the great majority of players who want to stay with the game during college. Tennis On Campus was designed to promote and develop the growth of recreational tennis on college campuses and transition players from high school tennis into USTA Leagues.
The National Campus Championship is the culmination of the Tennis On Campus season which features co-ed teams from more than 550 colleges and universities nationwide competing in intramural and intercollegiate tennis. Tennis On Campus provides students with a competitive environment, the opportunity for team camaraderie and social networking, all without the rigors of a varsity program.
The section championship is administered by the United States Tennis Association (USTA); United States Tennis Association Northern California Section (USTA Northern California); and World Team Tennis (WTT). This partnership has not only resulted in record participation at section championships, but also in growing interest and participation in club and intramural tennis on college campuses throughout northern California and northern Nevada.
Check out the Tennis on Campus website at www.tennisoncampus.com for complete results, stories and photos. The tennis on campus website also offers all college clubs fundraising resources, coaching tips, and marketing materials.
