Today we have Dr. Darrell Bock and will be discussing his book, "Blasphemy and Exaltation in Judaism: The Charge against Jesus in Mark 14:53-65." He was president of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) for 2000–2001, serves as editor-at-large for Christianity Today and is on the board of Chosen People Ministries and Wheaton College. He is a well-known author of over thirty books on biblical topics. Were the claims made by Jesus as the "Son of Mam" and coming on the "clouds of heaven" standing at the "right hand of God" blasphemous and why? Also at John 8:58 were Jesus claims of ego eimi an equation to the God of the Old Testament or can such claims be more expansive in these charges of blasphemy?
And after the program, ifyou didnt get enough Bock than tune in right after our program at 3pm ET right here on Blog Talk Radio to our partner Radio ministries at Minister Grok Radio and listen to Nick Peter's Deeper Waters Radio program. Nick Peters will have Dr. Darrell Bock as a guest immediately after our program same day! As an dedicated pro-peace activist, I frequently encounter anti-war proponents who have the idea that religion is at the heart of most wars. They cite the Crusades, the sectarian violence in the Mideast and "religious" riots in Myanmar, India, Bangladesh and elsewhere.
What they do not recognize is that religion is not the problem. Abuse of people's faith in religious leaders is. It is one thing to put your trust in God, but if you trust any leaders to tell you what God wants you are going to find that those who seek power will often abuse this trust. It doesn't matter if they are priests or politicians, imans or idolators praying at the altar of corporate profits.
With some 80% of Americans and most of the rest of the world professing belief in some sort of God, it is foolish and short-sighted to demonize the faith of the majority of people who we need to build a united international front against fascism and war. War was outlawed by the Kellogg-Briand treaty only because religious leaders put aside differences to work together with secular groups and individuals in the common cause of peace. That is a lesson we all must learn from.

Saturday 6/30/12 9am ET/ 8am CTRL/ 7am MTN/ 6am Pac Call in and listen, ask questions or share comments at 1-347-934-0379 We will have on our show David Withun to share with us the eastern orthodox doctrine of divinization also known as theosis. What does Christianity teach about "participation of the divine nature" (1 Pet. 1:4)? When Athanasius spoke to the Arians about becoming "God" what does he mean exactly? Are Trinitarians in essence pantheists or are Unitarians the truest representation of pantheism in their own henotheism? David Withun's blog can be found at: http://www.piousfabrications.com/ Other valuable links to this subject are: http://orthodoxinfo.com/inquirers/frag_salv.aspx Known apologist and author on Jw related subjects scholar Dr. Robert Bowman writes on this subject the following: http://www.associate.com/ministry_files/The_Reading_Room/Doctrines_n_Theology_2/Ye_Are_Gods.shtml
Even all of our Founding Fathers were Christians! The nation was formed on Christianity. Well, that's not exactly true. Our Founding Fathers were mostly Christian...that is except for George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, and James Madison...They were all Deists or Unitarians, meaning those people believed in God, but didn't believe in Christianity. Much like our Founding Fathers, I believe you should have the right to choose in what you believe in. If you believe that I am wrong in this statement, ask yourself, "If the Founding Fathers started the United States as a Christian nation, why did they purposefully leave it out of the Bill of Rights? The First Amendment clearly reads:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
~First Amendment, Bill of Rights of the Constitution
No where does it say that "Congress shall make a law respecting Christianity and shall not prohibit the free exercise thereof.” Ponder on that one a bit...
In our ongoing series What is Faith?, we are exploring different religious traditions from around the world.
Today we look at Unitarianism.
Joining us today is Reverend Nate Walker, Settled Minister of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia.
Nate was born in Munich, Germany on December 31, 1975 to Mary Coffey who was singing and dancing in the Alps after seeing The Sound of Music (no wonder Nate turned out to be gay!). Nate was 1 year old when he convinced his mom to return to the Sierras where she married her true love Steve Walker. Nate was four when his brother Kenny was born and was upset when his parents did not take his advice in naming his brother "Grover." Through years of therapy he got over it.
Mary & Steve spent most Sundays riding their horses in the Sierras near Lake Tahoe. Nate suspects that they are the founders of the long-lost Equestrian religion.
He treasures his friends from Carson High School and is grateful to his many mentors and loving family, all of whom openly accepted him when he came out of the closet at the age of 15. At that time his Grandmother introduced him to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northern Nevada because she knew they were welcoming and affirming. Over the years, Nate has traveled over 16 countries and 36 U.S states and loves spending time with his partner. Nate currently lives in Staten Island, New York where he serves as the minister to the Unitarian Church.
Nate is thrilled to serve as the Settled Minister to the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia. He previously served the Unitarian Church of Staten island, NY; the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC; the Community Unitarian Church in White Plains, NY; and the Fourth Universalist Society in the City of New York; and the Fourth Presbyterian Church of South Boston. As an administrator and educator, Nate has served as a fellowship program coordinator at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons
