The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview The Last Supreme Susaye Green. Neil will interview Susaye to find out about The Supremes, Twenty Feet From Stardom, and Her latest album.
Born in Houston, Texas, she began her professional career at the age of 12 years. After moving to New York City as a teenager, she appeared in various commercials and attended and graduated from the New York City High School of Performing Arts.
Prior to joining The Supremes, Greene sang with Ray Charles' Raelettes and Stevie Wonder's Wonderlove, which paired her with Deniece Williams and Shirley Brewer. In 1973, she sang lead as a guest vocalist on New Birth's hit "Until It's Time for You to Go" (a cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie's song). A successful singer and songwriter as well, Greene has written hit records for Michael Jackson, Deniece Williams, and many others.
Greene was a member of The Supremes from early 1976 to summer of 1977 (replacing Cindy Birdsong), and performed on their last two albums, High Energy and Mary, Scherrie & Susaye. Working alongside original member Mary Wilson and Scherrie Payne, Susaye quickly found her niche in the group and amongst the group's legions of fans. Susaye took lead on "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," in the group's live shows, which never failed to garner a standing ovation, and recorded "High Energy", the title song from the High Energy album. On June 12, 1977, the Supremes performed their farewell concert at the Drury Lane Theater in London and disbanded.
20 Feet from Stardom was one of the highlight movie moments for me in 2013, and people are now talking about its message and impact. This was a powerful film, because of the ways in which it raised the focus on other aspects of the music making, from the vantage point of supportive roles. It begs the question about the place our emphasis, and the cost of that, as we may loose out on the way this secondary roles are many times more important in the way the allow the lead to emerge as a flower of a well connected whole.
This was a film about the role of background singers, mostly women, that provide an essential component to the sound and the success of any great record. I thought too the success of this was the balance between being informative, and being reflective, being a historical document, and yet being a contemporary critique of industry and market taste practices, making us all appreciate the totality of what music making and record making entails, and that these are human tales and processes, and extraordinary talent and perseverance.
This was a movie that gave much from all sides. Lias Fischer, was my favorite because there was something about her vulnerability that spoke of
the ambivalence of being, a star, and yet shows the complete dedication of hard working artists. Essays of Note this week focuses on the work of Black composer, Florence Price.
Neil Haley, The Total Tutor host of the Total Celebrity Show, interviewed Charlotte Crossley to find out details about the documentary, her experience filming it, and what it was like to be part of an Oscar winning film.
Through hard work and determination, Crossley has been blessed to maintain longevity in the entertainment business. As a singer, her music credits include working with the likes of Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Lainie Kazan, Muddy Waters, Sister's Love, Boz Scaggs, and Hiroshima. As an actress, she has appeared in films including The Preachers Wife, Beaches, Sister Act 1, Sister Act 2, When Harry Met Sally, Faster, and the Emmy Award-winning HBO film Behind the Candelabra. Her most recent film, the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, was directed by Morgan Neville. It reveals the untold stories of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century.
“It is wonderful to be part of academy award-winning documentary," said Crossley. “ We told Morgan this piece was Oscar worthy, so get ready to walk and get that statue. It sets the bar for achievement for the rest of your life.”
During the interview, Crossley explained that the film is a documentary story of 6 background singers. The documentary covers 50 years of background singing, showing how they all got their start. The movie discusses the struggles, the high lows, about being forgotten, and always being 20 feet from the star. She also talked about how music was made and how black singers went to where the work was, not vice versa.
“Being a background singer we had to cover the stars,” Crossley said. "We covered the likes of the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson.
CEO of Simply G Media, GJ Reynolds said, "Charlo stayed the course, and ended up landing on a star."
The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview 20 Feet From Stardom Star Dr. Mable John. She will discuss her experience in the documentary and her career.
Mable John (born November 3, 1930) is an American blues vocalist and was the first female signed by Berry Gordy to Motown's Tamla label.

'Twenty Feet From Stardom' puts backup singers center stage"
By Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times Film Critic
Their voices are powerful enough to tear you apart and put you back together again, and their stories will do the same. But when you call them backup singers, you better smile. That's because the performers in the infectious and irresistible "Twenty Feet From Stardom" are willing and able to outsing any solo act in sight and are not shy about letting you know it. "There is a power to what it is we do, but no one has acknowledged it," says singer Janice Pendarvis. No one until now.
Veteran director Morgan Neville ("Troubadours") took the idea offered by the late Gil Friesen, longtime president of A&M Records, and has made a moving and joyous behind-the-scenes documentary about a world filled with big, bold personalities and the music they make. These women sing in a way that is transformative for us, and, it turns out, for them as well.

There are certain obstacles that we all have to deal with before we find success. The problem is in recognizing the obstacles. All too often, ambitious people delude themselves into thinking that the path to succes is clear. Then, they wind up stumbling without really knowing why.
Ironically, the lack of a clear goal is the most common obstacle to success, even for people with large amounts of drive and ambition. Typically, they focus on the rewards of success, not on the route they must take to achieve it.
