    The Power is Now Interview with Girish Balachandran

    Girish Balachandran is a 24-year veteran of California municipal utilities (including water, electricity and natural gas). Currently he is the General Manager of Riverside Public Utilities (RPU), which serves electricity to approximately 105,000 customers and water to approximately 65,000 customers, and is one of the largest municipal utilities in California.
    Since joining RPU in 2014, Balachandran has initiated a number of innovative and collaborative processes focused on the following priorities: rebuilding aging water and electrical infrastructure, utilizing advanced technology to improve service delivery and customer satisfaction, developing the workforce to meet new skills needed in the utility of the future, and developing business models for the utility to adapt and thrive in a an uncertain environment.

    Before joining RPU, Balachandran served as General Manager of Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) for seven years. Balachandran led a series of changes that resulted in AMP’s #1 rating in residential customer satisfaction after years of steady improvement, bond-rating increase from A- to A+, and selling a failing telecom system to end years of financial losses.
    Prior to his tenure in Alameda, Balachandran served in a variety of capacities with the City of Palo Alto Utilities, including Assistant Director of Utilities, Resource Management. He started his career as an analyst with Pasadena Water and Power after obtaining his Masters in Electrical Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles.

    Donnell Spivey is the Immediate Past President of the National Association of Real Estate Professionals (NAREB). He is the owner and broker of Exit Spivey Professional Realty with over twenty-nine years of experience in the surrounding Baltimore area. Donnell’s business philosophy is to lead and manage a team of real estate agents, specializing in residential and investment property sales, while providing full time professional real estate services. When you work with Donnell Spivey, he becomes the client’s personal assistant in the real estate transaction. This former president of NAREB and former 1st Vice President is an accomplished broker and leader in the real estate community.


    He is currently a board member of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, Real Estate Brokers of Baltimore, National Association of Realtors, Greater Baltimore Board of Realtors, Maryland Association of Realtors, Howard County Association of Realtors, Anne Arundel County Association of Realtors, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and a member of the 100 Black Men of America. Donnell received his education at the Catonsville Community College after graduating with a degree in the offered real estate program. He received his training as an REO specialist and is constantly continuing his education in regards to real estate, marketing, and technology. His specialties include residential listing and sales, new home sales, investment property, relocations, and REO properties. Donnell Spivey is currently continuing to better the real estate community through his involvement in real estate organizations and  lives with his family in Maryland.

    Reverend Charles Lamont Dorsey is the Executive Director of COR Community Development Corporation. He is the past immediate Youth and Young Adult Pastor at Christ Our Redeemer AME Church. His academic record includes a Master of Divinity from the Claremont School of Theology and a Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology from the University of California at Irvine. Reverend Dorsey is currently pursuing a Doctoral Candidate at Pepperdine University. His ministerial career has included tremendous favor from the Lord; Rev. Dorsey was blessed to sing the National Anthem for the President of the United States, Barack Obama. He has also been blessed to travel to the Holy Land (Israel), where he preached on the Sea of Galilee and baptized in the Jordan River. He released his first gospel album, “The Charles Dorsey Project,” and his first book entitled “Consecrate Yourself,” which can both be found online. Charles is happily married to Attorney Lakeshia M. Dorsey, who is invited around the country to discuss policies surrounding foster care and family law.

    Steve Peterson CCIM, is the Broker/Owner of Infinity Investments which is a commercial real estate brokerage and investment firm based in Oakland, California.  His focus and expertise is in apartment buildings, but he has experience in office and retail property as well, working as both a broker and principal.  Steve has been in the commercial real estate business for 12 years both as an investor and a broker/agent. He started his company Infinity Investments in November 2009 amidst one of the worst real estate& economic downturns in history; however the company has turned a profit each year.  He started in commercial real estate working for an investment firm raising capital towards the acquisition of large apartment buildings and small NNN leased retail property.  Steve  has raised over $10 Million dollars of equity capital for projects such as a 336-Unit Luxury apartment building in Houston, TX purchased for $24,000,000, a 248-Unit apartment building in Fort Worth, TX purchased for $5,000,000, a 4,000 square foot Lyon’s restaurant building in Turlock, CA purchased for $1 million, a $500,000 renovation of a tri-plex in San Jose, CA,  a 24-unit building in Columbus, Ohio that required $500,000 towards the acquisition & rehab,  a 58-Unit apartment complex being acquired for $1,050,000 in Columbus, Ohio, and the acquisition of a Promissory Note from JP Morgan Chase on a 5-Unit building in Oakland, Ca.
