Sustainable Hudson Valley help communities, public agencies and civic organizations to accelerate their efforts for reduced environmental footprint and greater economic prosperity, by forming and supporting coalitions with training, technical assistance, and ongoing, flexible assistance. They design projects to inspire commitment and creativity by identifying "stretch" goals and creating strategies to achieve them. In keeping with their belief that people-power is the under-utilized secret ingredient in sustainable development, we focus less on policy and more on action-oriented education, events and projects that demonstrate new possibilities.
As Executive Director of Sustainable Hudson Valley since 2004 is Melissa Everett, Ph.D.. She is an outreach and communications strategist working at the intersection of climate action, green industry and community development. She has helped to build a movement of local innovators who are reducing their communities’ carbon footprints and building the market for clean energy industries. The author of three books and many articles, Melissa has given lectures and workshops on three continents. Breaking Ranks, her study of conscientious objectors, won the Olive Branch Award from the NYU Center on War, Peace and the News Media. She published the third edition of Making a Living While Making a Difference: Conscious Careers for an Era of Interdependence, in 2007 and was honored with the Bronze medal for Best Book in Foreword Magazine’s annual rankings. Sometimes the answer isn’t more time or more space—it’s less stuff. But how do you begin to sort out everything that has accumulated over the years? And how do you keep from accumulating more?
Host Kathy Sipple speaks with Marianne Beal Peters, the author of "Declutter for Good: Share Your Stuff & Reclaim Your Life, a book that will inspire you to rid yourself of the possessions that are clogging up your plans, goals and dreams so you can pass them along to those who could use them.
The owner at Fresh Words, Marianne writes on a variety of topics and contributes to several publications, specializing in sustainability and gardening topics. Marianne lives with her husband and two teenage daughters in Plymouth, Indiana. They recently downsized, giving away three-quarters of their possessions to move into an 85-year-old house where she's trying to establish an organic urban garden without doing permanent damage to her body or mind. When she has a free moment, she likes to sneak outside and pull weeds.
