Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1331

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Patricia A. McKnight from Breese, Illinois, a small town some 40 miles east of St Louis. Trish, a returning NAASCA family member, a child abuse survivor, is author of "My Justice," the true story of her struggle to overcome the cruelty of her childhood. The man who assaulted Trish, her stepfather, continued his torture for twelve long years. His torment left her so severely scarred that it would destroy everything good in her life for the next three dcades. Her path in life became one of continued violence against her, including 20 years of Domestic Violence in her own marriage. "I finally broke free to claim a life of my own and provide a home where my children could feel safe," Trish says. "It is the training of accepting the abuses against us and the belief in the brainwashing of our abusers that keeps us trapped in this life of control." She runs the well respected Butterfly Dreams Abuse Recovery effort and advocates for changes in the law, one of which has been named after her "Tricia's Law", the Family Crimes and Terroristic Abuse Act. The determined shattered soul of a victim has finally become the strong spoken voice of a survivor. As she says, "I now share my voice to help others understand they too can break free and claim their own happiness in life, feel safe, and finally feel true freedom."

A year and a half later, she starred in PURLIE, which earned her a TONY Award for her portrayal as “Lutiebelle". Ms. Moore later appeared alongside the iconic Eartha Kitt as “Marsinah" in the musical TIMBUKTU! Another first came when she landed the female lead role on Broadway as "Fantine" in the acclaimed musical, Les Misérables. Melba Moore was the first and last African-American woman to perform in that role.

Alexis Werner: Advocate for PTSD, Film Producer & Director of "Our Way Home"

    in Radio

Alexis Werner is one of the most accomplished women you’ll ever meet. As a 15 years old high school freshman, she founded Seeds of Hope, an organization dedicated to helping veterans struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After her step-father came home from Afghanistan with PTDS, she realized she could either be upset at her situation or do something to change it. So Alexis changed her situation and the lives of many others as well. Over one million US Veterans suffer from homelessness due to PTSD, endure financial difficulties, and lack a support system. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects more than 5 million people, so chances are you know someone who suffers from this anxiety disorder. It can occur after an extreme emotional trauma that involved the threat of injury or death – from combat to a car accident. Alexis set out to help veterans like her stepfather. When she graduated from high school, she received the Jefferson Award for Public Service and a $10K scholarship from the Anne Frank Foundation to be used for Temple University (Philadelphia) where she is currently a student. These days 20-year-old Alexis is also a Filmmaker. She recently produced and directed Our Way Home, a  documentary that follows the stories of nine veterans from WWII to the present day focusing on the devastating effects of PTSD. I’m excited to have this opportunity to speak to Alexis about her film project and hear about her experience as producer and director. This young superstar is still ascending! After the interview, please check After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for more info.
