Deepertruth: St. Vincent de Paul Active In Missionary Work

    in Religion

Jesus gave this example, “And he sat down and called the Twelve and he said to them, “If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” And he took a child, and put him in the midst of them; and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” (Mark 9:35-37)

Acts Chapter 6 informs us that the Apostles established an order of deacons to help them with the care of the widows. The Church has always needed help to take care of the poor. We do become the Lord’s hands when we do his will, to take care of the needy.

Through the inspiration of St. Vincent de Paul, the founders of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul would come to the United States in 1845 beginning at the Basilica of St. Louis.

This Basilica, commonly called “The Old Cathedral”, was named in honor of St. Louis, King of France.

Father John Timon, a Vincentian priest from Pennsylvania, would establish a local chapter in Louisville Kentucky in 1854 and the Society has never looked back since.

The Society has a broad outreach that has helped untold millions of people all over the world.

They continue to help the poor regardless of background of those needing help.

According to their webpage, it states, “The St Vincent de Paul Society’s members and volunteers reach out to the most vulnerable in our community through our Conferences, Special Works and Vinnies shops. Members and volunteers assist people in need and do not discriminate against cultural, religious or political beliefs.”

Exploring the history and folklore of St. Vincent

    in Travel

We journey to the island of St. Vincent to explore ancient places and the history of a proud people few know anything about.  Our first stop is to the Botanical Gardens of St. Vincent, the oldest such garden of its type in the Western Hemisphere, and we are joined by historian Dr. Edgar Adams for a look into some of the events and experiences that have defined his life and the history of St. Vincent.

Then we travel to Fort Charlotte where we meet Augustine Sutherland, a decendant of one of St. Vincent's indigeneous ethnic groups, the Garafuna.   Fort Charlotte was built by the British (1793-1806), not to defend against a naval attack but as an inland defense against attacks from the Garafuna, Kalinago and the French.  This in evidenced by the fact that the cannons of Fort Charlotte face inland.  Augustine shares some of the tragic history his ancestors faced here and some of the challenges he faced growing up as a Garafuna on St. Vincent.

    St. Patrick's Day 2015

    in Politics

The St. Patrick’s Day parade in Boston will make history this Sunday as two gay and lesbian groups join the fun.

The advocacy group Boston Pride and OutVets, a group of gay military veterans, have been welcomed by the organizers.

‘‘This is a tremendous leap forward,’’ Boston Pride organizer Sylvain Bruni said Friday.

Until now, gay rights groups have been barred by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council from marching in the parade, which draws as many as a million spectators each year. Twenty years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the organizers’ right to keep gays out.

    Who Was St. Patrick?

    in Christianity

In this segment I want to talk about St. Patrick. Who was he? What was his cause? On this day we celebrate many things such as:food, drink and parades, but are we doing justice to St. Patrick's Day. Is our culture influenced by our traditons or our faith. FaithTalk hosted by Peter Jannetti talks about the issues from a biblical world view.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day!

    in Lifestyle

Kiss me I'm Irish!   How many of you have tried to be Irish so you could snitch a kiss on St.Paddy's Day?  When you were a child and the game of the day was to wear Green so that you didn't get pinched did you wear green?  Or, were you the child that intentionally did not wear
Green so people pinched you?  Did you try to be like the other children when you were little.  Would you paint your skin green to be accepted?  Why do we celebrate St. Patrick'sDay?

Do you drink Green Beer on this holiday?  We will talk about more than this holiday if you call in to change the subject!  Please call!   Thank you!
