What could possibly be wrong with social justice? We like justice. We are social beings. Should not our communities be just ones? Author Elgin Hushbeck, Jr. maintains that social justice is not justice. When we pursue social justice, it is at the expense of true justice and in its pursuit of equality, social justice threatens liberty. It is a case of setting contradictory and incompatible goals. Hushbeck examines our current pursuit of social justice and how it has failed, while looking also at the scriptures we use in that pursuit and how we have misunderstood them. While we should care about our neighbors and find ways to ease the plight of the poor, social justice’s emphasis on redistribution is not only often unjust but it actually makes things worse. His prescription? Pursue justice and liberty without any adjectives.

When we consider what social justice is... how quickly is justice modified by economic necessity? How can individuals act/behave in ways that recomfirm the tennants of real social justice, ie compassion, generosity, understanding, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you..." etc. Can social justice only be spoken about in churches and practiced among the participants in your church? When you leave the church, and you mingle with general society, you may imagine potential enemies, competitors that may effect your survival and that of your family among random masses of people. This leads you to curb your natural impulses toward social justice. Can a 90 year old man be applauded for feeding the homeless in a public park... and not repremanded and arrested? Where is social justice in our lives today and how can it be encouraged?

Bryan Stevenson is a public-interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned. He's a professor of law at New York University Law School and the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, an Alabama-based group that has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent prisoners on death row, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults.
EJI won an historic ruling in the U.S. Supreme Court holding that mandatory life-without-parole sentences for all children 17 or younger are unconstitutional. He has won relief for dozens of condemned prisoners, argued six times before the Supreme Court, and won national acclaim for his work challenging bias against the poor and people of color. He has received numerous awards, including the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant. He is a graduate of the Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Government, and has been awarded 14 honorary doctorate degrees.
Among the first cases Bryan took on was that of Walter McMillan, a black man from Harper Lee's hometown of Monroeville who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn't commit. The case would change Bryan's life and transform his understanding of justice and mercy forever.
JUST MERCY (Spiegel and Grau Hardcover) follows the suspenseful battle to free Walter before the state executes him, while also stepping back to tell the profoundly moving stories of men, women, and even children, who found themselves at the mercy of a system often incapable of showing it.

Tonight on Human Rights for Prisoners March, we will discuss our response to a possibly unfavorable decision by Ferguson's grand jury. Join the March at 12 midnight, EST. Call (818) 572-2947. The only reasonable response to a decision not to indict Wilson is to Boycott 4 Justice. Persons who are determined to do in-person demonstrations should only protest on the street level at malls. Avoid being corralled into expected areas where you can be easily attacked. Money, money, money is the key to oppressors' hearts. Inspire in them a new love for justice. See these articles:
