Sergey Kovalev vs Jean Pascal Recap

    in Sports

Sergey Kovalev, man. He's a fighter who doesn't give opponents whole lot of options. For instance, when he's about to knock you out, he either thrusts his pelvis in your direction or laughs at you. And after he knocks you out, he makes an internet meme out of you. Make no mistake. Kovalev is an assassin, and he proved it by stopping a ballsy Jean Pascal in the latter's backyard. This week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Queensberry Rules' Patrick Connor welcome Brent Brookhouse of MMAjunkie to the show to talk Kovalev-Pascal, Andre Berto vs Josesito Lopez, Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao, and much more. Thanks for tuning in!

Bernard Hopkins vs Sergey Kovalev Review

    in Sports

Sergey Kovalev dominated Bernard Hopkins in Atlantic City, New Jersey. At one particular stage of his career, this seemed as an impossible feat to accomplish. Kovalev was once a fighter who fought professionally for free, as no promoter wanted to sign him. It wasn’t until Kathy Duva took the risk of signing him, that he finally got the opportunity to perform under the brightest of lights.

From the opening bell, Kovalev asserted his dominance. He continuously stalked Hopkins, trying to cut off the ring, and to set traps for the 49 year old veteran. Towards the end of the first round Kovalev managed to catch Hopkins against the ropes and landed a big right hand that caused a knockdown. This dictated the pace for the rest of the fight.

Kovalev continued cutting off the ring, throwing body shots, mixing in feints, and landing a few big punches every round. Kovalev was very consistent throughout the bout, while Hopkins was extremely inactive because of his refusal to take many risks due to the respect he had for Kovalev’s power. This caused him to be outworked every single round.

Bernard Hopkins vs Sergey Kovalev Preview

    in Sports

On Saturday night, HBO will be live from Atlantic City, as two of the top three light heavyweight boxers in the world will be on display. Golden Boy Promotions presents champion vs champion as “The Alien”, Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins will be squaring off against Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev in a bout for the WBO and IBF World Light Heavyweight Titles, as well as the WBA Super World Light Heavyweight Title. This unification fight will give great backing to the winner of this fight being touted as the best light heavyweight in the world, although Adonis Stevenson would have something to say about that.

The future hall of famer, Bernard Hopkins just continues to keep going. He now stands with a record of 55-6-2 with 32 KOs, but the thing that sets him apart from everyone else is his resume of work through his long and extremely successful career. He successfully defended his IBF middleweight title for 19 defenses which lasted over an 11 year span. He may not have won every fight, but when you mention the people he has fought, it’s unmatched by anyone in the sport.

Bernard Hopkins vs Sergey Kovalev Preview

    in Sports

No matter what kind of fight is on the schedule, you can count on promotional companies and other PR entities to come up with gimmicks and weird stuff to get blood pumping. This weekend, "The Alien" (a 50-year-old guy who somehow is still relevant in boxing) meets "The Krusher" (a guy who displaces brain cells with a smile). Because Bernard Hopkins and Sergey Kovalev, two quality light heavyweights on HBO, aren't enough. And this week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and Queensberry Rules' Patrick Connor probe the ins, outs and what-have-yous of Hopkins-Kovalev. But there's other stuff to talk about, too. Like last weekend's Andrzej Fonfara vs Doudou Ngumbu Showtime card (that also had the absurd Javier Fortuna vs Abner Cotto and respectable Tomoki Kameda vs Alejandro Hernandez), and a few other odd offerings like Felix Sturm vs Robert Stieglitz, Tomasz Adamek vs Artur Szpilka, and the HBO undercard of Sadam Ali vs Luis Carlos Abregu. Thanks for tuning in!

Sergey Kovalev vs Jean Pascal Preview with Nicole Duva

    in Sports

Everyone else alive? I think we're okay. We're a little shaken up, hurt, tired, hungry and a little confused, but we'll make it. NBC had some boxing on the other night, if you didn't know. And it was pretty average on a lot of ways. Maybe that's good, though? Trying to cram tons of boxing talk into a two-hour podcast is going to be a challenge, but we'll manage it. This week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Queensberry Rules' Patrick Connor welcome Nicole Duva of Main Events to the show. There will certainly be a recap of the Keith Thurman vs Robert Guerrero and Adrien Broner vs John Molina card from Premier Boxing Champions/NBC/Al Haymon, and plan on some mention oif Amnat Ruenroeng vs Zou Shiming, but the preview of the Sergey Kovalev vs Jean Pascal/Steve Cunningham vs Vyacheslav Glazkov HBO card on Saturday will be big. Not to be forgotten, there's Andre Berto vs Josesito Lopez Friday on SpikeTV -- also a PBC card. It's March Madness in Febru-... Oh. We're in March. Anyway. Thanks for tuning in!
