How 4 Authors Got Published--and What Happened After That

    in Books

Award-winning novelist Jenny Milchman explores the journey to publication with four ITW Debut Authors, who share what it's been like to become a published author. Hear about the state of the industry today, boutique versus Big 5 publishers, whether or not you need an agent, and just when a writer can expect to buy that yacht. Or if they can't buy a yacht--why do writers stay in this game against such great odds? Call in with questions about writing and publication--and discover four great new reads.

After spending the first part of her career behind the mike as a disc jockey and talk show host, Kim Alexander recently made the move she’s been dreaming of her whole life, and began writing. The Sand Prince is Kim's first novel. Kim lives in Washington DC right across the street from the zoo; you can practically see the pandas from her window.

Dana Chamblee Carpenter's award-winning short fiction has appeared in The Arkansas Review, Jersey Devil Press, and Maypop. Her debut novel, Bohemian Gospel, won Killer Nashville's 2014 Claymore Award and will be published by Pegasus Books in November, 2015.

Jennifer Kincheloe is a research scientist turned writer of historical fiction. She has a PhD in Health Services from UCLA and spent 11 years conducting research to inform health policy. The Secret Life Of Anna Blanc is her first novel. She currently lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband and two children, two dogs, and a cat.

JS Law is a former Royal Navy submariner and senior nuclear engineer from Portsmouth, UK. He lives in Hampshire with his wife and two children and enjoys cycling, rugby and riding his Harley. His first novel, Tenacity, is a taut murder mystery that takes place aboard a nuclear submarine.

Author Chuck Greaves on books, wine and the Mob LIVE on Authors on the Air

    in Books

Pam Stack, host of Authors on the Air, is pleased to welcome back to the studio, Chuck Greaves.  Based on a trove of newly discovered documents, Tom & Lucky (and George & Cokey Flo) tells the true story of a singular trial in American history: an epic clash between a crime-busting district attorney and an all-powerful mob boss who, in the crucible of a Manhattan courtroom, battle for the heart and soul of a dispirited nation. Blending elements of political thriller, courtroom drama, and hard-boiled pulp, author C. Joseph Greaves introduces readers to the likes of Al Capone, Dutch Schultz, Meyer Lansky, and Bugsy Siegel while taking readers behind the scenes of a corrupt criminal justice system in which sinners may be saints and heroes may prove to be the biggest villains of all. Chuck Greaves spent 25 years as an L.A. trial lawyer before turning his attention to fiction. His debut novel HUSH MONEY (Minotaur), a legal mystery, won the SouthWest Writers' International Writing Contest, received starred reviews from both Publishers Weekly and Library Journal, and was a Critics' Pick from Kirkus Reviews. HUSH MONEY has been named a finalist for numerous national awards and honors, including the Rocky Award (Left-Coast Crime), the Reviewers' Choice Award (RT Book Reviews), the Shamus Award (P.I. Writers of America) and the Audie Award for Best Mystery audiobook of 2012 (Audio Publishers Association.)

Talking heads ,book nerds Stephen Campbell & Pam Stack discuss books and authors

    in Books

In a very special presentation, tonight former colleagues and author interviewers Stephen Campbell, host of the Author Biz and Pam Stack, host of Authors on the  sit down to discuss authors, books and interviewing.

Join these two book nerds for a LIVE chat about the best job in the world.

About Stephen Campbell:  Before getting into the business of writing I spent twenty-five years in the technology business as a financial guy, and then as a serial entrepreneur. I know what it takes to start and run a successful business. Will that experience translate into me becoming a successful author? Ha! The answer is no, of course not. But I did learn a few important lessons while running my own businesses. One of those was importance of being guided by experts. I'll be bringing those experts in on a weekly basis so we can all learn from them.

About Pam Stack:  I've always been a voracious reader plus a public speaker so when I was asked to co-host a radio talk show, it seemed like the natural next step for me.  I love hosting the Authors on the Air radio show and being the executive producer of the Authors on the Air Global Radio Network.  I get to speak to the most interesting people; I'm the luckiest blabber-mouth in the world.

Author Nick Pirog (Henry Bins & Thomas Prescott) on Authors on the Air LIVE

    in Books

Authors on the Air Host Pam Stack welcomes back Nick Pirog to the studio.  We had so much fun last time Nick visited (he couldn't remember the name of one of his books) I had to ask him to come back and try to stump him again.

From Nick: When I do a book talk or when I'm just chatting with someone about the craft, I find myself telling them things that I would want to know, if say, I was having a conversation with John Grisham. So here are a couple tidbits that you might find interesting.  My favorite five books are, in order; To Kill a Mockingbird, The Giver, Ender's Game, The Testament, and Plum Island.  Visit http://nickthriller.com for more about Nick.

Crime Fiction Master ROBERT CRAIS is LIVE on Authors on the Air

    in Books

Authors on the Air host Pam Stack is honored to welcome crime fiction master, author Robert Crais to the studio in a rare interview about his new book, THE PROMISE.    In the mid-eighties, feeling constrained by the collaborative working requirements of Hollywood, Crais resigned from a lucrative position as a contract writer and television producer in order to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a novelist. His first efforts proved unsuccessful, but upon the death of his father in 1985, Crais was inspired to create Elvis Cole, using elements of his own life as the basis of the story. The resulting novel, The Monkey’s Raincoat, won the Anthony and Macavity Awards and was nominated for the Edgar Award. It has since been selected as one of the 100 Favorite Mysteries of the Century by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association.  ELVIS AND JOE ARE BACK! This time they join forces with SUSPECT heroes Scott James and his K9 partner, Maggie, in RC's new novel, THE PROMISE.
