In 1990, the Guiness Book of Records declared Howard Stephen Berg, the World's Fastest Reader. No one has since laid claim to that title. Howard can read 25,000 words per minute. He can read a book in 10-15 minutes, or even less. You may have seen Howard with Justin Timberlake, Peyton Mnning, and Amy Sedaris as the spokesperson for the Sony E-Reader. Or perhaps you saw him complete the 1,500 page health care bill on Cavuto in only 50 minutes. Howard has appeared on over 1.000 radio and televison programs, including "Live with Regis and Kathy Lee," and "Dick Cavett." Because of his entertaining approach to the presentation of useful information, he frequently appeared as a guest with Jon Stewart, and Denis Leary on their Comedy Central shows. Red Book, Men's Health, Botton Line, Forbes FYI, and dozens of newspapers have hailed his reading program as a learning breakthrough. Listen to Howard today, and see what you learn about the Art of Speed Reading.
Most of us know Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her husband Joseph from the Bible. But we don't get a good sense of who they are as people. Bestselling author Elizabeth Berg takes on this challenge in her novel "The Handmaid and the Carpenter." Join Lori and Alice as they discuss the Holy Family as real, ordinary people, who faced enormous challenges and influenced, perhaps more than any other human beings, Jesus Christ himself. The book is not without controversies, so be prepared to challenge your beliefs and see Mary and Joseph in a whole, new light!
Today I am joined by an honored guest. My middle daughters best friend, Samantha. There is an amazing reason Sam is on my show. She represents what I am calling the Excellent Generation, and she has just been awarded a Peabody. She will be traveling to NYC soon to recieve it and I could not be more proud. Ms. Stendal is still in college and she has already been to Rwanda to be part of a documentary on the healing of the people of Rwanda. She has also been internationally recognized for being part of the dynamic duo that put out the anti-rape video that went viral on the internet last year, she came up with the idea. A Needed Response - is a video response to the Stubenville Rape Case. So many of us A dults consider the next generation as being many negative things. My experience has been that this Excellent generation will be one of the reasons we stay on this planet, they are doing a more responsible job than my generation. The bar is higher with these kids, not kids anymore, more wise than many grown-ups, they feel free to speak out and take action. Not sitting waiting for someone else to fix things! Sam is just finishing her degree at the University of Oregon and I just found out, just this morning that Samantha Stendal has won a Peabody Award for her video - A Needed Response. Join us to hear this amazing young woman!

Interesting fact: Like many journalism graduates he dreamed of writing “The Great American Novel.” He started it after college graduation, then marriage, two kids, and work (i.e. “life”) intervened. In 2008 found a green folder with 53 pages of his original novel in filing cabinet. Retired, he set out to and did finish “A Body To Bones, First Skeleton Series Mystery” and it was published in 2009. (See separate “Winners Circle” press release for listing of novels. The list does not include a short story “Amanda” published February 2014 or “Adolph’s Gold,” a novel-length mystery released March 13, 2014. This makes a total of five novels and one short story collection in addition to “Amanda.”He was featured by the Iowa City (Iowa) Press-Citizen in 2010 as “someone you should know” for his worthy contributions to his profession and the community.
Residence: A native of Ireland, he has lived in the Illinois/Iowa Quad Cities since 1989.
