Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis' grandson, Filmmaker Muta' Ali talks to host @ShellieGaines about his heartfelt documentary, based on his grandparents' Love, Life & Activism, on The Gist of Freedom www.BlackHistoryBLOG.com Special Thank you to @DashonFarad of Arise for your contribution!
The grandson of actress Ruby Dee is mourning the loss of his famous grandmother and releasing a new documentary about her extraordinary life.Compiled by The Gist of Freedom from NY1's Cheryl Wills report.
The film follows Ruby from her early childhood to her acting career when she declared that she would NEVER portray a maid or a mammy and how she was anxious to get her signature role in "A Raisin In The Sun."
The riveting documentary about Ruby Dee was released Sunday just days after her death. The film is called "Life's Essentials with Ruby Dee" and her grandson, Muta'Ali, is the director. He says he watched his grandmother pass away peacefully.
"We were all there around her bed in her room when it happened. And my mother told me that she told her as she was transitioning that everything is alright," says Muta'Ali.
"I'm hoping though that today's generation or younger than me even can get a glimpse into Ossie and Ruby that they haven't had before," says Muta'Ali.
Join The Gist of Freedom as we talk with Dan Duster, the grandson of the Anti-Lynching Crusader, Ida B. Wells!
"I had bought a pistol the first thing after Tom Moss was lynched, because I expected some cowardly retaliation from the lynchers. I felt that one had better die fighting against injustice than to die like a dog or a rat in a trap…I felt if I could take one lyncher with me, this would even up the score a little bit!" -
"In 1893, excluding Sundays, a Coloured man was lynched every day from January to December."
Ida never feared the lynch mob, she had faith in God to protect her: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalms 23:4). A threat to her life was not going to stop her from her crusade. The Review of Reviews announced that Wells, “a talented and resolute young lady of colour”, was on a pilgrimage around the British Isles to campaign on the subject of Negro lynching; they also published these Sadistic Statistics, "in 1893, excluding Sundays, a Coloured man was lynched every day from January to December."

Edward S. Majian, founder and president of SARTONK, the original boxing belt maker, speaks with JennieGirl.
Adapted from the Armenian word zartonk (meaning "rebirth"), SARTONK was founded in 2009, to safeguard a boxing legacy that dates back over three decades.
In the late 1970s, Ardash Sahaghian, a jeweler by trade and artist by birth, was invited to apply himself to the reinventing of championship boxing belts. It was in a New Jersey studio, under the management of Phil Valentino Sr., that Sahaghian gave shape to the now iconic modern boxing belts.
Works include WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO world championship belts, prominent regional models, specialty designs and early MMA (the original UFC belt). These, together with revisions to Ring Magazine belts, and historic reproductions of the John L. Sullivan and Rocky Marciano belts, account for his indelible mark on fight history.
Today, Sahaghian's contributions are advanced by his grandson, Edward S. Majian and today SARTONK is respected as a full-capacity design firm, with a steady flow of original and cutting-edge work.
SARTONK's legacy led to a 2012 induction of 91 year old Sahaghian into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame as Boxing's Master Craftsman. Soon to follow with its release of the "Champion of the Decade" belt. The Decade belt (Marquez v. Pacquiao IV) marked the first time that a belt itself garnered mass attention for its aesthetic value.
In 2013 ESPN The Magazine featured "Constructing for Champions" a photo spread of Sahaghian and Majian in its June 10 issue. This coverage helped elevate boxing belts into mainstream public awareness.
Our broadcast honors, October 15, as “Worldwide Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day”. Marika Baris is the Founder and Executive Director of My Baby Angel Foundation, which was created out of the pain, shock, and grief she and her husband, Dr. Frederic Wiedemann, experienced in the pregnancy losses of TWO of their grandchildren. Their granddaughter was born on June 18, 2008 at 22 weeks gestational age. She lived 20 minutes and was too young to survive. Their grandson, born on March 14, 2009 was stillborn at 24 weeks. The loss was devastating to them and their family.
The My Baby Angel Foundation was born out of Marika and her husband’s desire to help others suffering a loss, as well as to create a legacy of love for their deceased grandchildren. WEDNESDAY NIGHT 10/15/14 AT 8 PM EST. SOME GOOD CRAIC IS BACK WITH FIDDLER TONY DEMARCO !!!
Tony DeMarco: Irish fiddler. If that sounds slightly off, you have only to listen to the music on this recording to be cured of any preconceptions about the importance of ethnic purity in traditional music. There may have been a time when Irish music in New York City was played exclusively by Irish immigrants and their offspring, while their Italian neighbors strummed mandolins and sang opera. But the Big Apple really is a melting pot, at least for some of its disparate immigrant elements. Before World War II it really wasn’t very common for Italian and Irish Americans to marry each other. By the 1950s, however, this kind of ethnic mixing was fairly normal in Tony’s native Brooklyn, where the Italians and Irish lived side by side and attended the same parish churches.
Tony was born on May 20, 1955, the second of three children raised in East Flatbush by Paul DeMarco and his wife, the former Patricia Dempsey. Paul, a grandson of Italian immigrants, was a teenage lightweight boxing star who turned down an offer to turn pro and work with lightweight champ Paddy “Billygoat” DeMarco in order to pursue a more conventional career on Wall Street. Tony’s maternal grandfather Jimmy Dempsey was a New York City cop and a son of Irish immigrants who married Philomena “Minnie” Fenimore, one of several Italian-American siblings who married into Brooklyn Irish families.
Musical ability runs on both sides of Tony’s family. During the Prohibition years, Minnie Dempsey’s Italian immigrant father ran a speakeasy in East New York, where he played the piano and mandolin. Tony’s paternal uncle Louie DeMarco was a singer who performed with 1950s doo-wop groups, including “Dickie Dell and the Ding Dongs.”

James Robert Wright, 32° is 32 years old, resides presently in Los Angeles and has held many positions and decorations in his Masonic Lodges and Scottish Rite, in keeping with preferred family customs. His ancestral roots can be traced back to the Spencer and Saint-Clair families, making him Princess Diana's cousin and William Sinclair of Rosiln's grandson. James has a background in entertainment production, emergency dispatch, IT support, and then proceeding all that formal employ as an Envoy to the Supreme Council in Washington, D.C. Five years into being an actual Mason up to one year with carte blanche access to vaults and archives as Special Assistant to the Secretary-General, he unexpectedly uncovered some of the most shocking revelations about this so-called 'international charitable fraternal service organization'. Now, having blown the whistle on the Order, James currently finds himself on the frontlines in the truth and patriot movements rallying public awareness on the nature of corruption and control prevalent in society that is directly tied into the Masonic Cabal’s vast-sweeping network. Appearing on over 100 radio shows and counting, James asserts that “taking these insidious blood oaths with this Order and then holding public office or working in law enforcement constitutes the biggest conflict of interest the world has ever seen”.
Los Angeles born and bred singer/songwriter Eric Bellinger’s destiny preceded him. Grandson of Jackson 5 hit making songwriter Bobby Day, Bellinger has been singing since before he could speak. Captain of high school football team, the day came for Eric to choose between a scholarship to pursue a football career at the prestigious University of Southern California or follow his passion in music. Not long after making the difficult decision to turn down USC, Bellinger joined the R&B group aKnu (A Kind Never Understood) and was soon signed to Epic Records by two of the music industries most successful executives , Max Gousse and Tommy Motola. After experiencing success recording and touring with AKNU, Eric returned home to work on new music and discovered another passion, songwriting. The exceptionally gifted singer and rapper mastered his natural ability to instantly hear melody and rhythm under the guidance of childhood mentor and friend, Erika Nuri of The Writing Camp.
