    Assault on Public Education

    in Politics

Last week the majority in the state legislature, under the leadership of Gov. Sam Brownback passed a new controversial law providing "block grant" funding to our public schools. The agenda has many critics, and may force a constitutional crisis in the supreme court. Later this week from March 28 - 30 people will be walking from Johnson County (NE Kansas) to the Topeka statehouse to raise awareness and promote participation of the public.

Information about this event is at Game on for Kansas Schools. Stay tuned to RFK for updates.

Today we will broadcast a special program on the corporate attempt to take over and privatize our public schools with Charter Schools. The show will expose how the "reform" movement under Obama's "Race to the Top" is being used as a guise to bring about this privatization of our public schools. You'll learn how they're doing it, who's behind it and what you can do about it.

The Assault on Public Education is produced in the studio of WWUH 91.3 FM at the University of Hartford and airs on the last Monday of every month from 12- 1:00 PM.. at WWUH 91.3 FM (www.wwuh.org)

"The Destruction of Public Education" on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee"

    in Politics

Our Public Education is being destroyed.  It's as simple as that. Common Core, Race to the Top, Charter School Disinformation and Money, Money, Money.  In New York, a battle rages that dates back to misappropriation of Public School Funds, Cuomo trying to cut Public Education and give money to charter schools and, of course, Common Core.  Created by businessmen and shoved down the throats of parents and teachers with a focus on testing, Common Core is the cherry on top of the continued push to turn Public Education into a business. Joining me today is Teacher/Activist Marla Kilfoyle. Marla, a manager of Badass Teacher Association has been a parent advocate on Long Island in such groups as Parents and Teachers Against Common Core and LI Opt-Out. Marla has been a teacher in the Social Studies Department at Oceanside High School (NY) for 27 years. Also joining us Kenneth Hughes, public school teacher for 28 years who is watching the school where he teaches suffer from the budget shortfalls manipulated over the past decade and is looking more budget cuts direct in the face.  These issues in New York and throughout the country are as important as any in our society. So grab a cup of coffee and join us.  Longtime Activist, Coffee Party USA Board of Director & Radio Host, Bobby Rodrigo's show "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio airs Sunday Morning at 8:30AM. Advocating engagement Bobby points out the Constitution is the Rule of Law and why it should remain so. Money in Politics, the Political Party Machine and partisan blind allegiance is on full display as he advocates against the erosion of Constitutional Protections in the name of corruption & tyranny. "If we focused on following the Constitution we would solve many of the ills of our society.”

Education Canaries: Can data rich systems predict and prevent failure?

    in Education

One of the significant promises of big data in education is to predict and prevent student failure. Of course we want to see learners succeed and data can help us with that as well, however, catching students before they get lost or even drop out is essential. Some visionaries see technology as driving learning through increasingly intelligent prompts, assessments of learning, and directing learners to ever more complex and advanced concepts… all driven by models for learning driven by student generated data. More recently many educational leaders have a more holistic view of data and recognize that while we need to educate the whole child, we need to also look at information about the whole child to diagnose and address learning deficiencies and help students on a path where they can be successful. Beyond their inherent interest in helping children, educators and the institutions in which they work are being held accountable to show learner progress. In this show we will explore the many different kinds of data that can be used to monitor student progress, identify those who require assistance, and the systems that make sense of those data to support educators and parents in driving student success.

    Guests at the table:

Barbara Clements,  Consultant at ESP Solutions Group
Dan Ginsberg, VP Global Product Strategy at Pearson
