Aston Villa: Burning a path of glory through the midlands

    in Soccer

We've got two things on our plates today, and both involve midlands rivals. We start by talking about last weekend's win over Leicester City. What about that tackle on Westwood? Wasn't it great that Ciaran Clark is amazing? Alan Hutton too? And are Leicester our new least favorite team?

Of course they aren't, because then we turn our attention to West Bromwich Albion, or as I prefer to think of them: Wet Sandwich Albatross. We preview this weekend's derby match where it will be decided, once and for all, which team reallyis the pride of the midlands.

As always, you can listen here, or feel free to subscribe to the audio via any podcasting service you can think of.

Eating Vegan and Healthy Soul Food Cooking - Why Vegan is the New Black

    in Food

Can a diet free of meat, milk, eggs, butter and cheese actually taste good? Deborrah Cooper, author of the new cookbook WHY VEGAN IS THE NEW BLACK: MORE THAN 100 DELICIOUS MEAT AND DAIRY FREE MEAL IDEAS YOUR WHOLE FAMILY WILL LOVE says the answer is "absolutely!"

Her goal for this book was to help change the perception that healthy foods look weird and taste bad. The typical American diet is full of greasy high sodium fast food that really packs on the pounds and sets us up for serious health problems. Reducing the quantity of animal protein and upping the plants we eat has been proven to reverse heart disease, normalize blood sugar and lipids, and lower both weight and blood pressure in just a couple of weeks.

Statistics support these concerns, especially in the black community. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 78.6 million Americans are obese, which directly impacts the health and longevity of nearly one-third of the U.S. population. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. High blood pressure and arteriosclerosis impact the sexual health of Americans as well, reflected in erectile dysfunction in men, and reduced desire and blood flow to the vaginal area in women.

These are largely preventable afflictions, directly related to what we put in our mouths. Reality is, what we're putting on our plates is killing us. Find out more about how you can begin changing your diet for the better in this broadcast.

Unjunk Your Minds & Plates - Recipes

    in Food

Do you sometimes feel stressed, frustrated, and resentful when preparing meals? Do you feel guilty when feeding your family junk food? This suggests that you and your family may be suffering from junk-filled minds.  What messages are you feeding your brain when you put food on your family’s dinner plates?  How do you feel when you send your kids to school after a breakfast of Pop Tarts? Then what happens in your mind when you skip breakfast, survive on coffee and cave in when doughnuts are offered at the office or wherever you work?  Is there a relationship between junk-filled thoughts and junk food?

April O’Leary, Certified Master Life Coach, author, and speaker will join co-host and dietitian Stacey Antine RD (HealthBarn USA, Author: Appetite for Life) along with me in our Family Food Experts Kitchen to zoom in on how to unjunk your minds and meals. And we will fill your plates with fresh simple, nutritious recipes that give you the peace of mind you deserve!

April is a mom of 3 and she also founded the University of Moms because she feels being a mom is the most important job you can have and many of us are unprepared.  Stacey founded Health Barn USA, a hands-on program where kids learn to grow and prepare healthy foods.  So there will be an abundance of expertise on the show!

Come into our Family Food Experts Kitchen.  You will be so glad you did!

Suspense Radio One on One with Treva Hall Melvin

    in Books

Suspense Radio One on One with Treva Hall Melvin. Suspense Radio One on One is brought to you by Suspense Magazine and in partnership with partners in crime tours.

    Synopsis: Mr. Samuel's Penny

It’s 1972 and fourteen-year-old New Yorker Elizabeth Landers is sent to the sleepy town of Ahoskie, North Carolina to spend the summer with relatives. Her expectation of boredom is quickly dispelled when police sirens and flashing lights draw her to a horrible scene at the Danbury Bridge. Mr. Samuel, owner of Samuel’s Lumber Yard, has driven his car off the bridge and into the river, drowning himself and his daughter. The medical examiner thinks it’s an accident, but the Sheriff finds fresh bullet holes on the bridge right where the skid marks are. Curiously, Mr. Samuel died clutching a unique 1909 wheat penny—a penny that is then stolen from the Sheriff’s office. Lizbeth witnesses Miss Violet’s grief upon learning that her husband and child are dead, and decides she will help by finding the penny.

Her search involves Lizbeth in the lives of many Ahoskie residents. Like the owner of the grocery store, mean old Mr. Jake, who—as all the kids in Ahoskie know—hates black folks. Plenty of pennies in his till. Then there is Ms. Melanie Neely, otherwise known as “Ms. McMeanie,” who thinks the lumber yard should belong to her. And Mr. Samuel’s handsome brother Ben, who struggles to keep the business afloat after his more clever brother’s death. Lizbeth searches through the collection plates at church and in the coin jars of crazy old Aunt Ode, a strange old woman missing one eye and most of her teeth, who keeps a flask in her apron pocket and a secret in her soul.

Hybrid Jazz - with Bass Master Gary Grainger and Producer Matthew Shell!

    in Music

Amazing Gary Grainger is pulling double time on Tuesday, 11/4!  Not only is he joining us during the first hour of the show, but he has to RUN after 30 minutes to his sound check at Ram's Head in Annapolis.  That's where he takes the stage with Acoustic Alchemy on Tuesday night!  Whew!

Gary is no stranger to juggling multiple plates. Our "Hometown Hero" (another Baltimore Baby!) has been doing same for years.  From a family of six, Dad gave mandatory piano lessons to ALL.  One day, Mr. Grainger brought an old bass home and Gary seized it :)  Self-taught as a teen, he also experimented with sousaphone and tuba in high school. Brothers Glenn and Greg were gravitating to music, so Gary chose a similar path.  As a member of "Pockets", he toured as the opening act for Earth, Wind & Fire.  That segued into getting session work on the East Coast.  From 1986 to 1992, Gary was in John Scofield's band.  After that, he and fellow Baltimorean, Dennis Chambers, hooked up for Graffiti.  1993 was a pivotal year - he launched a recording studio with brother Greg that booked some high profile clients.  AND he worked with the Bill Clinton Inaugural Ball's Music Director, George Duke.  You that President Clinton took to the stage with his sax - Gary was there!  Between his own gigs as leader, honoring E,W & F with a tribute band and Alchemy, our Bass Master is BUSY!  Many of us are looking forward to a chat :)

Matthew Shell is back in the second hour of the show!  Special circumstances: His "My Baby", in honor of his beautiful wife!  We're going to hear TWO takes - one is the original and the other is a Jazz re-mix.  Matt might be bringing the artists who are breathing life into his love song, so we're prepping for a full house!  Join us for F-U-N!
